Curacao - The Island of Healing
Curacao is the "C" in the ABC islands, considered part of the Netherlands Antilles nestled in the tropical waters of the Caribbean ocean. Known by early sailors as the, Ilsa da Curação (Island of Healing), this ABC island remains a popular place for rest, relaxation, and emotional healing. The largest of the three islands, Curacao is quickly becoming a popular hot spot for many tourists and scuba divers.
Aside from the hundreds of historic landmark buildings in Willemstad, the capital of Curacao, the island also features a wide variety of stunning natural landmarks and wildlife areas for tourists to enjoy.
Trails are intertwined throughout the island for visitors to explore the splendor of plant and wildlife, including salt marches featuring various cacti and flamingos. There are plenty of activities for everyone to enjoy but the main attraction is the water sports.
This tropical paradise features numerous beautiful beaches, bays, and inlets for tourists enjoyment. The sea floor drops steeply only a few hundred feet from the island. Divers can explore the reefs and underwater scenery simply by swimming out from the island, instead of booking a boating tour. Although nothing compares to the shore diving of Bonaire it's still worthy of some underwater exploring.
The island is surrounded by pretty coral reefs and a variety of Caribbean reef fish. Unfortunately these areas have not been protected. In recent years, these coral reefs have been heavily damaged by tourists disregard for the environment and over-fishing. The island is now re-building a healthy underwater environment by experimenting with artificial coral reef replacements which has proven to be successful.
In Curacao you will not find the same world class restaurants that Bonaire has to offer but what they lack in fine dining they make up for with their clubs and a hopping island nightlife - there is truly something for everyone.
