Bonaire Windsurfing Rules

Bonaire windsurfing

Lac Cai was made for Bonaire windsurfing. There is no other place in the world that is more appropriate for Windsurfing than this bay and the surfers here know it. It's one of those hidden treasures of the Caribbean where windsurfers from around the world come to push the limits! The wind, the water, the shallow lagoon and a sandy bottom also make this an ideal place for beginners to sharpen their windsurfing skills.

Here's the low down on the perfect conditions:

Lac Cai beach area Warm turquoise water and soft white sand set the stage. This lagoon is sheltered from the swells, while the current and the winds are predictable (15-20-mph) most of the time. In the lagoon you can find flat calm waters, choppy waters or waves depending on how close you are to the mouth of the bay. The waist deep water makes recovery easy, reserving your energy for surfing.

The freestyle surfing you can see from Sorobon beach is amazing. Not only can you watch the inspiring stars of “Children of the Wind” Kiri Thode, Tonky, Taty, and Choco Frans, but also the extraordinary non-planing specialist Caesar Finies. Spectators can hangout and watch the spectacular show that is put on daily by these local champs. For your refreshment needs there are a couple of beach bars, and a barefoot massage hut nearby for those in need of some pampering.

Jibe city Bonaire windsurfing Once you've been inspired by the wind kings you can experience the Bonaire windsurfing joy for yourself. There are two well-equipped surfboard shops to serve your rental needs, both of which offer lessons if need be. The two shops, Jibe City and , have plenty of boards available for rent for every skill level. They offer 1/2 day, full day and weekly rentals. (There may also be package deals available when you reserve your accommodation before your trip.) The gear they have available is suited for Lac Cai conditions: High winds + Light surf = great freestyle. However, if you prefer the big surf outside of the protection of the reefs then it will be necessary to bring your own gear to Bonaire; neither Jibe City nor Bonaire Windsurf Place offer gear for use beyond the boundaries of Lac Cai.

But remember, if a cruise ship is in port for the day then it's a good idea to avoid crushing disappointment and reserve your board and your sail of preference well ahead of time.

The off-peak season on Bonaire is from April to September, which is also when the winds blow a little stronger. So if you’re coming for the surfing and are looking for a great deal, this is the time to come. There are many packages available to suit your needs.
