Bonaire Snorkeling
Bonaire's spectacular underwater show is not just for scuba divers to enjoy.
Bonaire Snorkeling takes very little skill and doesn't have the large price tag associated with scuba gear. All you need is your mask- your porthole to the spectacular underwater world. In the salty waters of the southern Caribbean, floating is effortless, and your fins take all the work out of moving about the reefs.
There really is no bad time to go snorkeling but the best times are early morning when the reef is just waking up or at night when the nocturnal creatures come out to play. Dawn and dusk are great times to snorkel, as you get to witness nature’s shift change.
During the day, make sure to use a good waterproof sunscreen since the water can act like a giant magnifying glass, drastically increasing the power of the sun’s rays. A minimum of SPF 30 is recommended while snorkeling. Another alternative s to wear a t-shirt, or pick up a water shirt, which is designed with UV protection in mind. Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security if it’s a cloudy day- those UV rays are relentless and can still be harmful even through cloud cover. And remember, for your own safety, and that of the underwater environment, avoid touching and/or grabbing anything on the reef, and be mindful of your fins. Many a beautiful fan coral has been smashed by reckless divers and snorkelers. They weren’t bad people, they just weren’t being cautious.
Here are the top ten reasons why Bonaire snorkeling is the best of all the Caribbean Islands:
- diverse reef life
- no crowds
- easily accessible sites
- healthy reefs
- inexpensive
- warm ocean temperatures
- great underwater visibility
- great snorkeling for all levels
- a protected fringing reef circles the entire island
- shallow reef sites
