Bonaire Picnic
There's not a single restaurant that can compare to a perfectly timed Bonaire picnic with dazzling tropical views and a cooling Caribbean breeze. Pack yourself a lunch or last night’s leftovers before you start your day’s adventures and head to these fantastic spots for a Bonaire Picnic.
Sorobon beach in Lac Cai has the most white sand you will find anywhere on the island. Set up shop right on the sand and watch the windsurfing action from the beach. The water is warm, sparkling-clean and waist-deep. There are two choices for refreshments if you didn't bring your own. Both are good and offer healthy choices. You can and should get a leg and foot sea salt scrub at the massage hut by Bonaire Windsurf Place- it's worth every penny of the $15.00 charge.
Pack a lunch and head on down to the town pier. From here, it’s a quick 7-minute boat ride to No Name beach on Klein Bonaire. Explore the island, enjoy the sandy Caribbean beach and do some snorkeling if you wish. Take extra caution while on No Name beach as this is a turtle nesting ground. There are no facilities on Klein Bonaire, so make sure you bring your own water, food, sun-screen and shade. (We know you can’t literally bring shade. But you can bring something with which to create shade. Use your imagination.) Enjoy your time on the island, but don't forget to pack any garbage out with you. Return fare to Klein Bonaire is $20.
You can plan on coming to Atlantis beach for a quick snorkel and end up staying the entire day. That's because the kite-boarding here will razzle-dazzle you. There's also good snorkeling on colorful reefs, and you may even see a turtle or two. The sunsets on this part of the island can be dazzling. If you’re lucky you can spot the flamingos off in the distance returning to Venezuela.
The most rewarding Bonaire picnic spot is the 55-minute hike up Brandaris mountain in Washington Slagbaai Park. Bring lots of water and everything else you need for your perfect picnic. On a clear day you can see Venezuela as well as Curacao, all of Bonaire and the Caribbean ocean as far as the eye can see. There are plenty of colorful tropical birds and lizards that make this hike exciting.
In Washington Slagbaai Park you will find the popular beach, Boka Slagbaai. It's a family friendly beach good for snorkeling or diving and has some historic buildings of interest. You can pack your own picnic or have lunch at the restaurant where there are great views of the Caribbean.
Also located in Washington Slagbaai Park, there are several secluded coves for the more romantically inclined, where you will share your picnic lunch with no one but the island breeze. On the north-east side of the park, check out Cocolishi beach or Playa Chikitu. Bring your own picnic, water and anything else to make your romancing more enjoyable as there are no facilities.
