The Bonaire Donkey Sanctuary is the Best Two Hours You'll Spend on your Vacation
Visit the Bonaire Donkey Sanctuary and you'll be thrilled by the warm welcome these docile animals give you. These donkeys aren't shy at all, especially when you hands are full of food! Before you go, pop over to the Cultimara in Kralendijk and buy the day old bread and all the crunchy fruit and veggies you can carry. Make sure you save some food for the tortoises and iguanas that are in the garden park as well.
The Donkey Safari is a blast! Bring your cameras, this is an experience you'll want to capture. You drive your car through the safari for a meet and greet of the herds. These happy-go-lucky furry friendlies will bombard your vehicle and stick their heads right into your truck looking for a scrumptious snack. You did remember to bring snacks right? Looking for the Mommas with their foals? They are in the Donkey park along with the tortoises and iguanas. There is also a great gift shop where you will be tempted to adopt a donkey for yourself. In the 17th century, when the Spanish were in control of the island they brought the donkeys in to perform some hard labour. When they were replaced by autos, the donkeys were set free to fend for themselves on the island. These poor animals have had a life of abuse. Before the sanctuary an average of a donkey a week was being killed by speedy motorists. Others were set on fire and harassed in horrible ways. The Donkey Sanctuary offers shelter and protection for these loving creatures. It is entirely funded by generous donations from people like you! One caring Dutch women, Marina Melis, has devoted herself to giving these poor harmless animals a home and raising money for the other donkeys of Bonaire who haven't been so lucky.
