The Best Bonaire Beaches Are Just a Little Bit of Exploring Away
Even though Bonaire is not known for its beaches, you can find some of the best Bonaire beaches in a few little sandy coves that you can enjoy all to yourself.
On the uninhibited island of
Playa Chikitu Bonaire
Chikitu beach is located in a beautiful little secluded cove in Washington Slagbaai Park. You won't find many others here since strong currents and heavy waves make for dangerous swimming conditions. The sand dunes have been carved by these waves.
Boka Cocolishi
Cocolishi beach is a unique black sandy beach with purple waters. Although the water looks inviting it's not safe for swimming. Plan on stopping here for a picnic before exploring the rugged coastline and lava stones in the area. Like Chikitu Beach, Cocolishi Beach is located in Washington Slagbaai Park and does not get frequent visitors.
Playa Funchi
Funchi beach is a great sandless beach in Washington Slagbaai Park, which is also a dive site and great for snorkling. You will be visited by iguanas and other lizards who roam this beach looking for handouts. Swimming is allowed.
No Name Beach
One of the best Bonaire beaches, No Name beach is a short $20.00/return boat ride from the town pier to Klein Bonaire (a small island off Bonaire). This beach has the traditional soft white Caribbean sand, yet is remarkably untouched due to the lack of traffic. Be sure to bring your own shade, water and snacks.
Boka Slagbaai
Boka Slagbaai offers calm waters and the opportunity for great swimming, snorkling and diving. This is a great beach because of its location. Buildings here date back to 1868, and some now serve as refreshment stands. There is also Goto lake nearby which has plenty of flamingos waiting to pose for your photos. Wear sandals or water shoes for swimming as this is a coral beach.
Sorobon Beach Lac Cai
Of all the Bonaire beaches, Sorobon Beach in Lac Cai (on the southern end of the island) has the best and one of the only sandy beaches on the island. Spectators can hang out and watch the spectacular freestyle
Klein Bonaire
there is a long white sandy beach that is a reminder of what Caribbean beaches were like 20 years ago. For the most part the beaches tend to be narrow, the sand is sparse, full of coral and rather hard on the feet. People don't usually come here for beaches, which is all the more reason to seek out these jewels. When you do find a nice sandy cove it offers peace and quiet, and you will not get pestered by aggressive vendors hawking their wares as on other Caribbean beaches.
windsurfing
that goes on daily as the local champs practice. There are a couple of beach bars; The Hang Out beach bar next to
Jibe City
and The Beach Hut next to Bonaire Windsurf Place.
Bonaire Windsurf Place
also has a barefoot massage hut next to their shop for all your pampering needs. It's also a perfect beach for parents to bring their youngsters for safe swimming due to the waist deep water. Usually this beach doesn't get busy unless the cruise ships are in port.
